My Driving Dilemma

Had a break from my bum/chill life for a while. I signed up for AOB  (Area Orientatuin Brief). I’ve been here a good six months but I had to take the class so I can get my driver’s license. It wasn’t so bad, you just have to wake up early cause it starts at 8 am from Monday to Friday. It was very informative. Usually the class is for people who just PSC-ed to Japan. Most of the people I took it with were sailors who only been in Japan for a week or so. There wasn’t much families, just a handful.

The first two days were about orientation on the facilities and services of the base. It was very useful information cause there were somethings that I just found out for the first time. The third day was all about Japan and it’s culture. It’s not as useful information as the first two days cause you can google most of the things. The only thing that was kind of worthwhile information was the train systems. They’ll give you English guide of the train routes, something you won’t be able to find at the train stations itself, believe me I tried or maybe I just didn’t look hard enough. On the fourth day, you’ll go on a tour to Kamakura, where they’ll teach you first hand how to purchase tickets and use the train. They’ll actually dismiss you there so it’ll be completely up to you how to get home. I didn’t go to the tour cause I wasn’t up to it and because I’ve already been there a couple of times. On friday, they debrief you, take up a safety seminar and in the afternoon you take the written part of the driver’s exam. You actually get the booklet to study on Monday. You get the results a few minutes after the exam and all you need is schedule the practical part.

I passed my exam but they wouldn’t honor my Philippine license so now I have to get my CFAY license. What they’re telling me is I have to take Driver’s Ed which cause 300 bucks and is only valid here in Japan cause I’m considered as a first time driver, something that I’m offended by cause I’ve been driving since I was 16. There has to be a way for me to get my license and not pay 300 bucks to go through everything again. Not being able to drive is a complete waste of car and money. Everyday I have to take the bus and walk meters and meters. It wouldn’t be so bad if my stomach wasn’t getting so heavy. Pregnancy doesn’t go well with commuting. Also, doing grocery is a struggle because I’ll have to carry everything by myself to the bus stop and then from the bus stop to the building. Even taking taking the cab is a struggle because there isn’t a lot of off base taxis on base from the commissary. So yeah, I need to be able to drive, especially with the baby on his way. I don’t want to be carrying him around in a car seat everywhere I go. I have 6 months to figure out how I’m gonna get my license or else I’ll have to take the written exam again.

I wish there was someone I ask about this things but there no one cause most of my friends has no interest in getting a license and those who are driving have US state licenses so they didn’t have to deal with the things I’m going through right now.
